about

The album is a collection of nine original instrumental tunes and one cover. It's a bit of a concept album. For years, I've had a vague desire to combine music and climbing. Using climbing related album art is about the best I had previously come up with. But a few years ago when (as a joke and experiment) I recorded the track "Billy's gonna pull down", which is a radical re-imagining of "Billy in the Lowground", I realized maybe I had something. Sample climbers talking about climbing and put it into the music. In a dub or hip-hop kind of way. Some of the clips are historical. Some inspiring. Others strange and hilarious. But the goal was to find clips that fit with the music in a way that enhanced both the climber's words and the music.

The tunes are best described as "Newgrass style" (whatever that is) composition but are delivered in a variety of ways. Electric guitars and heavy drums blend in and out with banjos and acoustic guitar. Rock, blues, jazz, and bluegrass are all kind of blended together on this one. My Grisman, Bela, and Tony influence is pretty obvious, but so is my rock and roll side. This is a hard album to pin a genre on. And I'm pretty stoked about that. I played all the instruments, including bass and programmed drums. And I mixed the thing myself with a few tips from audio pros Robert George and Chris Hanzek. The fantastic album art of my home crag of Looking Glass Rock is by core climber and traveling painter, Rhiannon Klee Williams.
